About Me

David B. Gaskin

I’m a music producer, songwriter, and musician with a passion for crafting memorable songs that connect deeply with listeners.

From my early days as a guitarist and songwriter — inspired by Radiohead’s The Bends and OK Computer — to fronting my first band, Epic/White Elephant, I’ve always tried to share honest expressions of thought and emotion. Through that band, we found ourselves with opportunities to play alongside acts like Treble Charger and Idle Sons, gaining valuable early experience connecting with live audiences and sharing stages with bigger names.

I later studied audio engineering and music composition at Recording Arts Canada and Humber College in Toronto, where I studied songwriting with Rik Emmett (Triumph) and had the distinct experience of learning from some of Canada’s most talented and respected musicians, engineers, and producers.

Over the years, my journey included some unexpected detours — like a chance encounter with Leonard Cohen's fiddle player, Bob Furgo, who invited me to play at Pappy & Harriet’s, a storied desert venue known for hosting artists like Led Zeppelin when they wanted to road-test new material. In my earlier days with my band, we were lucky enough to work with Daniel Lanois's protégé, Robin Aube, at the famous Grant Avenue Studio in Hamilton, Ontario, recording one of our first records there.

Despite all my passion for music, there were many years when I struggled with social anxiety and depression. It forced me to step back from performing and greatly curtailed my songwriting. While I still wrote privately, I hardly released anything. That all began to change years later when I pushed myself to go to a few open mics in Victoria, BC. Through these experiences, I began building new friendships, connections, and — most importantly — a newfound confidence.

In February 2025, I released my first single, "The Road Again" under the moniker The Hidden Gold, marking a new chapter in my artistic journey. I also created a virtual songwriting community, Songfarm, which played a big role in helping me find my voice again and start releasing music.

Today, I'm busy writing and trying to capture the essence of this journey we call life through my music. I also work with other artists to help bring their visions to life as a songwriter and music producer. I'm not interested in following trends — my passion lies in uncovering the truth and bringing that out in the music.
